Toon visionary Genndy Tartakovksy’s feature debut Hotel Transylvania is finally leaping out of its comic coffin. But it took a very complicated process to compose just a single shot of Dracula’s daughter Mavis transforming into a bat and taking to the sky.
As explained in the exclusive behind-the-scenes clip above, several passes involving matte paintings, localized lighting, computer-generated velocity and much more were necessary to build that scene, as well as the rest of Hotel Transylvania‘s postmodern horror spoof.
Check back next week for Wired’s interview with Tartakovksy — the clever mind behind Dexter’s Laboratory, Samurai Jack, Star Wars: Clone Wars, Sym-Bionic Titan and, yes, even Korgoth of Barbaria. Until then, check out the clip above and let us know in the comments if you’re geeked on watching Tartakovsky’s all-star, all-ages romp through horror tropes and history.
Hotel Transylvania hit theaters Friday.
