AV MOD MATERIAL: ONE PIECE Ch. 689-690 Review

Yeah, it's going to cost him an arm and his legs.
Yeah, it's going to cost him an arm and his legs.

Luffy has caught up to Caesar and comes to the rescue of Brownbeard, but he's undeterred by the scientists taunts and continues the long tradition of caving in the faces of everyone who tries to intimidate him. In another part of the labs, Trafalgar Law gets his heart back and has a message for his former leader while he settles an old score with Vergo at the same time.

The Good

That'll do, Brownbeard. That'll do.
That'll do, Brownbeard. That'll do.

I have to applaud Oda for what he creates with his secondary characters. He can introduce really vile people, but find a way to have you sympathize with them, if even only a little. Crocodile was a megalomaniacal bastard in Alabasta, but I found myself rooting for him a bit during the war. Now, we have Brownbeard. I cared little for his first appearance. He was nothing more than fodder, but seeing Luffy come to his rescue was touching.

Vergo wasn't half the threat his abs made him out to be.
Vergo wasn't half the threat his abs made him out to be.

One has to start wondering how long it will take for villains to realize that the more you talk and taunt Luffy the harder the blow back gets. Caesar Clown just doesn't strike me as the most experienced in the scientific method. The more he tries to scare Luffy. The harder he keeps getting punched. Mind you, I'm far from complaining. I'm actually finding it rather satisfying.

I seem to remember that there were several commenters that doubted Trafalgar Law and thought he had gone evil several chapters back. Now, we see that he's actually trying to end Doflamingo's grip on the underworld, and he has an idea that the Marine's are up to something huge. It was a downer to see Smoker get getting pummeled by Vergo, but it was all worth it to watch Law give that final blow to Vergo's Armament Hardened body.

The Bad

And yet he's still talking after this.
And yet he's still talking after this.

I know with ONE PIECE you tend to have to stretch the imagination and not let implausibility get in the way of enjoying yourself. However, I find it just odd that Casesar isn't unconscious already from the repeated blows Luffy has delivered to his skull. He's not a trained fighter. He's a mad scientist who's always depended on his logia powers and other people to keep him safe. The man screams the one-hitter-quitter type. Maybe he's finally out, but I have a bad feeling next chapter will be more of his impotent boasting through broken teeth.

The events of these past chapters leave me a bit confused. Two of the biggest villains of the entire arc have been built up to be these great dangers who are nearly invisible. Still. the pair of them have recently been cut down with relative ease. I'm left with this odd feeling of, "Where does this go?". Unless Vergo has some big trick other than using Armament Haki on his entire body. He's pretty doesn't have a leg to stand on - - literally. I guess Caesar could run away again, but I don't see Luffy letting him out of his sight now. Is the fighting truly over already? Will the rest of the arc will be dedicated to escaping the island with the kids, or will Doflmingo's crew arrive?

Verdict 5/5

Law, I stopped trying to predict you a long time ago.
Law, I stopped trying to predict you a long time ago.

If there were two chapters that ever existed for the purpose of causing a person to spontaneously shout out, "Oh, DAMN!!". These two would fit the bill. Watching Luffy repeatedly crush Caesar's face in left me with a big enough grin, but Law's bit was the real shocker. It took me a second reading to just comprehend that Law didn't just cut through Vergo. He sliced open the entire freakin' mountain they're in. However, he kind of went a bit too far. Can't the gas now get into the entire lab now?

The more recent events brings one burning question. Even when Luffy captures Caesar, where are they going to take him to keep him from Doflamingo? I could almost see Trafalgar - - and hopefully Monet - - tagging along with the Straw Hats to the next adventure in the New World. Not that I'm saying they'll be signing up under Luffy, but they are now an alliance. I find myself tentatively hoping this could all turn into the New World edition of the Baroque Works Saga.
