Naruto #607 - I Don't Care Anymore
In a Nutshell
Obito meets with Nagato and his friends to discuss working together. After being shut down, he travels to Konoha to begin his ill fated attack of the village. With the flashback having ended, the battle between Madara, Obito, Naruto, and Kakashi continues.
High Points
- More Madara.
- These flashbacks are over with.
Low Points
- Scenes that should be interesting come off as bland.
Rants and Raves
Many scenes in these past few weeks that should have been of ultimate importance have just been extremely bland. Obito meets with Nagato and rather than something tense or a seduction to the dark side, we are hit with a Naruto Uzumaki style the power of love conquers all speech from Yahiko. Kakashi and Obito standing over Rin's grave had practically no emotion to it at all. I'd feel the same reading a picture free description on our wiki pages than as I did reading the version written and illustrated by one of the most popular mangaka of today. On one hand, I'm tempted to say that voice acting a music will go a long way to fixing these issues and perhaps it's an inherent weakness of the medium, but then I think about manga like Nana which manage to pull emotional reactions from me without these things. It feels like there are one of two things going on: either the writer is just poor at anything that doesn't involve fights and violence or the translation is incredibly bland.
Additionally, a major part of this is that it's all in the past and we know how it's going to play out. We aren't flashing back to Yahiko's death and Nagato's fall to the darkside, we're flashing back to a really poor attempt by Obito to get Nagato on his team, which we all know does happen, and some cheesy power of friendship speech. Essentially, we're seeing the worst parts of these past events.
Grade
C+. I like Madara... a lot but even he couldn't save this chapter for me.
William Taylor just isn't feeling Naruto like he used to. The title of this chapter sums up his thoughts: I don't care anymore. Hopefully it gets better soon.
