Photo: Merri Cyr Everyone from John Legend to men and women in uniform have covered Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep,” but that didn’t stop Jake Shimabukuro from picking up his ukulele and giving the Grammy-winning song a whirl. And thank the internet gods he did. Shimabukuro, who rose to fame (or infamy, depending on whom you ask) after posting a ukulele version of The Beatles’ “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” on YouTube, has done a rousing cover of “Rolling” that duplicates the heft of the original, even without Adele’s powerhouse vocals. “The first time I heard Adele’s ‘Rolling in the Deep,’ I thought to myself, ‘That would be a great tune to play on the ukulele,’” Shimabukuro said in an e-mail to Wired. “I kept it in the original key but changed the form a bit. I thought it would make a nice addition to the new record.” That record, called Grand Ukulele, was produced by one-time Beatles producer Alan Parsons, who brought in a 29-piece orchestra to help round out Shimabukuro’s sound. The new album will also feature Shimabukuro’s interpretations of “Over the Rainbow” and Sting’s “Fields of Gold.” Check out the ukulele hero’s version of “Rolling in the Deep” below.
